3. GAINING
AN APPROVED QUALIFICATION
a) Full
Licence : most companies
will ‘load’ (charge an increased premium) for riders holding a
Provisional
Licence . Passing the official
Driving
Test would therefore qualify you for a reduced
premium. Note: there is usually a very long waiting list for a driving
test, anything from 9 – 14 months, so apply early for your test and make
sure you pass first time – see
Pre-Test
b) Take and
pass the AON / AXA / Quinn Direct Bikecare test: This test which only
applies to those insured by or seeking insurance from AON/AXA will be
preceded by a period of training to help ensure you achieve a good grade.
Only certain instructors (e.g. such as all MSA
instructors) are authorised to provide the training and conduct the test.
The level of discount available depends on
I) your current licence status and
ii) the grade you achieve:
Grade 4: is for provisional licence holders, achieve this grade and AON/AXA/Quinn Direct
will treat you on the same basis as if you already had a full licence
thus giving you a saving of approx. 25%
Grade 3: entitles you to the standard premium rate
less 10%.
Grade 2: entitles you to the standard premium rate less 15%
c) Pass the
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Advanced
Test .
In order to pass this test at either the required Silver or Gold levels
you will almost certainly need to have had both some prior training and
put in a lot of practice. See Advanced Courses. This test is the highest
attainable civilian standard. Those who achieve either a Silver or Gold
would qualify for discounts as follows:
AON/AXA 30%
Carole Nash 10%
Quinn Direct 35%
It would be
prudent to check first with your insurer, we have heard of cases where
Carole Nash have said that the premium they were quoting was already so
low that there would be no further discount regardless of
qualifications! |
